Hi,

Just got myself a new 70 gallon tank and I was wondering if it is possible to comm ropefish with oscars. My plan is to get 2 decently large ropefish (maybe 15-20cm) and introduce them in the tank together with a 10cm long oscar. Just hypothetical sizes btw. Would you guys think this would be possible?

There's a pretty good chance that once the oscar grows larger it would end up eating the ropefish. It might work for awhile, but personally I wouldn't risk it.

nope i have a rope fish with 2 jds 2 jags and a few cons. they never even bother him

I have a ropefish that is a tankmate to 8 cichlids and a pair of knifefish in a 72g tank. I recently removed two big Jack Demseys that were forcing the rope fish into hiding continuously. My rope is not very big yet and is not bothered by any of the other tankmates. I have never kept oscars so I am just throwing 2cents on the table... but I would think they would definately stress ropes out if not kill them outright...

Oscars are pretty Robust fish while Rope fish are really skinny. As they grow, the Oscar will try to take the Rope fish down if they are aggressive and/or hungry enough. I wouldn't risk it, personally. Cichilds like JDs and Cons have smaller mouths and don't have the voracious appetite that an Oscar could have. It also depends on size. If you do keep them together, it should only be short-term.

with my personal experiences with oscars; i would say a definite no. oscars love to be bullies. if the oscar didnt eat it outright chances r they will kill it due to stress
