The VILLE
so i have some driftwood that has been out of a tank for awhile now and it is getting fragile . will rotting drift wood hurt my tank it is of unknown type collected from local stream.

well when i picked it up i noticed it was a little crunchy if i put pressure on it so does that mean it is rotting or just brittle from being dried out after it was in a tank for awhile

Is it mushy or is it hard?

its actually hard and crunchy if put my finger on it and push i can push in to hollow spots/void areas in the piece

sounds more like its very dry... rotting wood... well.. smells and feels like rotting wood

I hope that i never feel or smell that!:WHOA:

so what would the rotting wood do to my water.

depends on what kind of wood and how/why its rotting...

ill let someone else give you facts (im not sure if my info is fact or myth so i dont want to give out bad info)...

but generaly speaking... rotting wood in the tank = not good

I'd get rid of it. I've collected a few pieces and just toss the stuff I can dent with a fingernail. If it leaves a light mark, I keep it- I just toss the stuff where I can get in a half mm.
