Hey everyone,

Usually I hang in the poly forum but a question has brought me over here today. I have 3 Rotkeils which I had since they were ~2" long. 2 are males and 1 is a female (you can already see where I'm going with this I'm sure). Over the years I haven't had much of an issue but this last little while I think 2 have paired and become quite aggressive to anyone in the tank. My poor 3rd severum is out of the love loop and getting picked on pretty hard. I'm not sure what I will be doing with him long term at this point but am wondering if I can place him in my 30gal while he heals up. He's ~9" so he's no small fry but I use that tank as a grow out and currently contains 2 poly's ~5" each and a ghost knife ~8" which aren't quite big enough for transfer into my bigger tanks.

This injured severum hasn't been known to be all that aggressive, but with the other 2 and my altifrons I'm not sure it's ever been given the chance as they keep eachother in line pretty well.

What do you all think? Would it be too risky? My only other option at this time is placing him in a 10gal or leaving him be. His injuries are all superficial right now (scale loss mostly as they bite at his sides), but I also don't want him becoming sick if he doesn't get to heal.

p.s. I did see eggs a week or so back from the other Rotkeil pair but they were quickly eaten by the polys.

Not many good choices out of that list...10gal way too small for a fish of that size. I QTd a 4in sev in a 10gal and had to do big daily WCs - I dont think a 9in fish could even turn around in there. Could you swap the knife fish and the sev in the 30gallon until the sev heals up and you figure out your next move?

8in knife could probably hold its own with the sev pair and altifrons, but keep an eye on it. That sev pair is going to be rough with any newcomers.

I think I'm going to see if I can borrow a friends tank for him to heal up in. The male alt is over 10" (not including streamers) and I do not trust it at all with my knife as it's probably one of the most aggressive fish in there (not oscar aggressive, but it does pester to make sure people know who's in charge). Right now they have a balance set up in that tank as far as pecking order goes and I don't think a timid ghost is a good transfer even if it's temporary.

Thanks for the reply though.
