Rotkiel breed and lay eggs bi-weekly. Wigglers last week though. Noticed that when they become wigglers. The little juvenile will pick them off slowly without any parent protection. Makes sense since it is theirs, lol. Will need to siphon those little buggers out before all the eggs are gone again. But here is a quick vid w/involuntary music from my 3 year old in the background:

To note. The male is a real glass banger and you'll see him bust through the glass at the end of vid. J/K

I thought about the red shoulders as a breeding project. Dont they get to be about 10 inches with a max out at 12 for optimum grown? They seem to breed about like most other cichlids from CA/SA dont they?

I'm so jealous. My male Rotty kept beating up my female Rotty so bad I had to separate them. Now she is living with my sterile male Red Spotted Severum and they just dance around each other.

How are the fry doing I would be interested in some when your ready to sell!

The eggs in that video got eaten when I took the 9 swimming fry (1/2 or smaller) out to my 55g as they also snack on the recent spawns. This causes a frantic and will frantically go to the eggs and eat it up before I get to it. Due to my temp. being 83 degrees, they're laying eggs every week or 2.

Cool species, but I can't have anything else in the tank when spawning. They turned sideways and dove after my Brokopondo geos when they were temporarily housed together.

Yes, they do get bigger than 10 inches, but not too often for Rotkiels. I've seen bigger one at a LFS and it was ugly. These met each other later in life and size; 7" female & 8" male and bonded immediately.

Good luck on finding a female. They seem to be easier to find than a male rotty.

Here is a video taken 20 minutes ago. They laid eggs tonight at a different location. I'll make a better attempt to successfully rear the frys from this batch. Baby rotkiels are so darn cute! Maybe, this will motivate me to make a better attempt when my Orange Head and Brokopondo Geos lay eggs again, lol.......
