So i took some water from my Piranha tank to petsmart and got it tested, my ammonia was SKYHIGH, the girl asked why my fish wernt dead. Few weeks before i got fresh carbon and added that, and added new filters, and my water went cloudy again. It never has been clear but this time it got really cloudy, so i just thought that was why. Well she said i should get these 2 chemicals, API Ammo Lock, and Prime that removes Chlorine, Charmine, Ammonia, and detox Nitrite and Nitrate. also provides slime coat. I added what it said to add to 120g of water and watched tv a little bit, than went to bed. The water looked ok but when i got up in the night, it had a bad oder. Thought it could be the trash can but when i got up at 9am the apt reeked of sulfur. Any ideas on how to fix this? I had done a 30% water change day or so before i used anything.

If you changed your filters you killed your bacteria colony.

Get your own test kit and start testing your water daily.

If you can test ammonia over 0.5ppm, do a 50% water change. If you can test nitrite over 1ppm, do a 50% water change.

You need to recycle your tank. The good news is that since it was cycled once before it will cycle fairly quick, about 2.5-3 weeks.

The cloudy water is a bacterial bloom brought on by the ammonia in the water.

LOTS of water changes are needed, and DO NOT throw out your filter media.

the rotten egg smell is caused by anaerobic bacteria. Somewhere in your tank you have a pocket of bad bacteria that is thriving in the absence of oxygen. stir up your substrate real well.

YES WATER CHANGE EVERYDAY FOR THE NEXT 4 DAYS AT LEAST 60 TO 70 % OF WATER AND DONT GRAVEL VAC THE BOTTOM UNLESS YOU CAN SEE THE DEBRIS BUILDING UP IN THAT AREA. WATER CHANGE

Forget about the amm. lock it is not the good thing to use all it does it hold the amm and that sometimes wont show up on test but the amm is still in your tank

Gravel vacs would be essential at this point. Why would you suggest against them?

Well, thats the thing, since these guys are really messy i desided to keep the bottom clear so i could vac up the extra food. Ill do a 50% when i get home tho, how often should i do a 50% water change? Ill pick up a tester after work if i have enough cash on hand. Any other tips? Do i need to add clean carbon and if so how often?

Carbon will not help in this situation at all.

If you are short on $$, but just the ammonia test kit and just the nitrite kit. Those are the 2 most important to you right now. Make sure you get a liquid reagent kit with dropper bottles and test tubes. Don't be fooled by the cheaper dipstick tests. They are useless.

You need to do a 50% water change as I said previously, every time the ammonia is over 0.5ppm or the nitrites are over 1ppm. Once you have no ammonia and no nitrite in your tank once a week 50% change is proper maintenance on a properly stocked tank.

Alright ill get the liquid test kit, i know where i can get that. Is it ok that its bare bottom tho? Thanks for all your help. I haven't had this smell before and it had me worried and rightfully so.

Bare bottom is fine. Makes me really wonder about the surfer smell though. Do you have any HUGE pieces of drift wood, or perhaps is the smell just icky and not actually sulfur?
