I need to route the edges of some 1.5" thick cell cast acrylic. The router I have is crap and in need of replacement. What size router do you guys think would be best for acrylic up to 1.5 thick. Most of the acrylic Im working with will be at least 1" thick. Was looking at a 3 hp Milwalkee or 2 1/4 hp Dewalt.

the dewalt is better IMO, all tools i have are dewalt and they have never failed me. I was actuly looking at them today(i got "lost" at the homedepot ;) ) and the dewalt one provided you mean the same one, looked like it could take more abuse. the one you mean is the plundge kind right? around $200?

Yeah very similar to the Porter Cable set up, fixed base and plunge. It also included the handgrip version. I like it, but wonder if thats enough hp to cut 1 1/2 acrylic.

I honestly think the new dewalt is crap. I had a brand new drill fail when I was drilling a 1/8" hole in a 16 gauge piece of steel (first time I ever used it). It seems as if when a "good" name starts selling at "popular" stores they turn into worthless tools.
I've noticed the same thing with other products, such as car audio.

well dewant is makita, its the same company and the same took, they merged about 5-6 years ago. I think that they are great., i have a realy highend mastercraft maximum brand table saw, they discontinued it. The price dropped from $2000 to $650 so even though i dont have the garage built yet i JUMPED on the deal, ita an awsome saw and has a huge motor on it. i took it home and set it up withing two weeks and began useing it, the moter burnt out within 4-5 cutts... i took it apart and took it back to the store, they said oh damm sorry and gave me 150 store credit and i went to where they manifacture them and got the moter swapped.

the moter burnt because they set it up wrong they wored it for 240 not 120 and it fried...

Is it crap?, no some one screwed up when making it and honestly its the best thing i ever used, and the saw they brought out to replace it is crap. its not nearly as pro. or near the price too.

I wanted to buy it for 2-3 years then it went on sale and after a bit of hastle i ended up getting a $2000 saw for $500.

from dewalt i have a drill, hammer drill, jiggsaw, cordless drill, cordless inpact driver, saws-all(most used tool), two circular saws(small and big), mitre saw And a angle grinder.

NONE OF THEM HAVE EVER LET ME DOWN, and some of thease are replacements after a crappy circ.saw or drill broke down, the rest i spent a bit more any just got the dewalt...Oh and a nascar dewalt hat too :)

A couple of projects, the 1 1/2 peice is actually from the 1700 gallon shark tank, I need to clean up the edges a little and flatten the acrylic out first before re-using it. The other project will be 22ft by 36" X 36 tall. Two 1.25 thick 10 ft windows seperated by a center beam, very similar to the fish guys tank. My problem is one of time, I have very little so this project will probably have to wait until 2008. Fortunately I have all of the materials, just need a good router. Does anyone know how good Milwalkee tools are?

I have a $200 set of Skil tools that has treated me much better than any dewalt POS ever has. Maybe I've had horrible luck and used the crap that they produce, but I have not had a good experience with them.

I like Milwaukee drills, but have never used any of their other tools. I have a 3hp Ryobi plunge router, and have used it with a 3/4 inch round over bit to make part of a teak handrail for a friend's boat. Just start taking a little off at a time and adjust the bit a little for each pass. I would think that most of the larger routers would work fine. And I agree with this statement 'It seems as if when a "good" name starts selling at "popular" stores they turn into worthless tools.'

I have the milwaukee and you won't be disappointed.. In my line of work we abuse tools and our milwaukee kits have outlasted the dewalt kits by leaps and bounds. Just a better built product.
