I have noticed on my female motoro that the spines on her tail starts as a single row near her body but splits into 2 rows towards the end of her tail. My male has just a single row the entire length of his tail. Has anyone else observed this?

yeah alot of rays do this and I believe they use this as a defining characteristic in identifying rays. Some species even have 3 and 4 rows of spines.. Reticulata are noted as having only a single row of spines that are very far and few between..

I know this is used in describing different species. Thought motoros have a single row?

i know ecajoes female bertha has multiple spines 2 or 3 rows... ill try for some better shot of her tail.... she is a peruvian motoro....

Wow, never noticed this before with rays, all of mine have had only one row.

Anybody got a pic of 4 or 5 rows?
