hello everyone im new here and after some answers if anyone's got any idea's!
i got myself a royal clown about a month ago now and everything seemed fine! he was about 16inch's long, he hid all day and ate like a pig at night, it all happened yesterday when i noticed him out in the day which is rare, he couldn't control where he was swimming, just kept floating about. he only lived for about an hour after i first noticed. i used to see him rub his face up agaist a few of the decorations i have in the tank but that was the only weird thing really. water conditions are all fine! can anyone help?

Sounds like a swim bladder infection...don't blame yourself you don't have to have done anything wrong. you just need to be alive to die..go on, get another clown.

i had one do the same thing...Just went crazy out of nowhere. What water conditioner do you use when doing water changes?

Eric
my tank holds 150gal, i do about a 25% water change every week using RO water. the shop i got it from has another two still, £40 quid each. tempted to get another one but must investigate the death of this one first!

The only reason why I ask is because there have been a few of us that use PRIME as a water conditioner that have had this happen with an RCK.

Hmmm, I use Prime occasionally. Who else has had that happen, cuz if I see that pattern I'll drop Prime like mugger.
I primarily use Stresscoat for W/Cs.

Man I wish I could help more. I atributed my problems to prime because they always did this when I was trying to fight an ammonia spike. They were fine until I used the prime and then they did the same thing you are describing. I know that it sounds like my problem was the ammonia but I later found out that I was fighting ammonium which is harmless to fish. I was overdosing the prime to convert the ammonia and I really think thats what did it. I stopped using it and my currant RCK is 18" long. Just my observations.

This was from my thread when my first RCK was acting weird. Swimming eratically, upside down, running into objects, and eventually death. I don't know if there is a serious link but in hindsight I definetly saw a change in my RCK after water changes with Prime...I now use Amquel Plus just for my own piece of mind. Knives may just be a little touchy when it comes to a certain chemical in Prime.

Not likely. My royal have been with me for 10 months, I have used prime in his tanks for all ten, not a single problem. Same is so with my gold.

I really hope you are adding trace to that RO. There are many elements that are needed in water that RO/DI will remove. This can be very hard on fish long term.
