Has anyone kept a Royal Pleco alive without driftwood. I am interested in acquiring a Royal Pleco in my rockscape cichlid tank but don't want to add a driftwood just for the pleco.

I know of one guy who says he doesnt keep wood with them hes full of crap.

When yoi say rock scaped cichlid tank I guess you mean africans
South american fish dont mix well with africans and vise versa

Plecos need driftwood to survive? never heard of that!

I have done it but don't reccomend it. They grow slower and you have to be carefull of what you feed them (no protein and wafers with sawdust and spirulina).

I had a royal that just stayed on driftwood and won't eat... He almost starved to death until I removed it. Then he started to eat again. Got healthy and lived for another year(s) with no driftwood.

The LFS I got him from didn't have driftwood either.

Despite saying this I do believe they should have access to it as they eat it naturally(I think mine was an oddball).

Just took mine back to an lfs after having it for six months or so. I had a large piece of mopani that he would chow down on but once I put the manzanita in the tank he fed on it almost excluseively. The reason I took him back was after two days the tank would need to be gravel vacc'd. Thing was a sawdust factory! Only got 12 bucks credit for him and they turned around and sold it for almost fifty. I didn't mind much cuz now my tank is SO much cleaner. Never again. But yeah they need wood.

Just panaques, like royals and clowns.

To the OP - if you're planning on buying a royal, you should definitely have wood in the tank for him. A huge part of their diet in the wild consists of wood, it wouldn't be fair to keep one without providing proper care IMO.

They dnt need a big pieces of drift wood just a tiny one will do as long there is wood in the tank. Royal need wood to survive and the wood help wear down their teeths.
