I've seen some postts about this here, and I THOUGHT that the answer was that Pleco's (Royal's, Panaque's) will scratch up acrylic tanks. But others say that Panaques are fine in an acrylic tank if they have "enough wood, and are well fed"--whatever that means. Are they, or aren't they? If they are, what about all the other issues, because I want some, and I have plenty of tank for them, but I need to know if the setup is right for them first.
So what is the definitive answer to these questions?
1--Do Royal's rasp on the sides of the acrylic and scar up an acrylic tank? Does just hanging stuck to the side count as "rasping"? Will I regret putting an 8 inch Pleco in my new acrylic tank?
2--What exactly is "well feeding " a Royal? Just wood? Or pellets and vegetables, too?
3--Can an 8 inch Royal fend off 12 inch Zonatus, BlackBelts, Synspilum and get something to eat? Cause my fish already shove each other off Zucchini on the bottom. A Royal Pleco kinda mean when it comes to food? In the light? Or do I have to put food in the tank after dark and just "wonder" if the Royal's ate it or the Ciichlids ate it?
4--Can a Royal even defend itself? Do they "fight", or do they just ignore bites from cichlids because they're "armored"?
5--Would a Royal skin my Vieja at night while they're sleeping in the dark?
6--About wood--does it have to be Manzanita? Mopani no good for Royals?
7--Is Royal's in a big tank with big cichlids a good idea? Or is it a "long shot", like planted cichlid tanks, or Umbee in a community, etc.?
Thanks in advance
