Are these compabtible in a 180??

The RTC is about 8 inches anf the gar is about a foot?

Any thoughts??

sure will be fine till that rtc gets about 14" and tries to eat the gar

It's less a question of if they are compatable but rather how long they will be compatable. The RTC will outgrow the gar 4 or 5 to one and eventually reach the point of viewing the gar as a late night snack.

This is all true, plus if you had both as adults, doubt a 180 would do very good at all.

if the gar is much bigger than the RTC atm then it should work out for a few months at least. once the RTC starts to outgrow the gar (which it will) then u better have an alternative pond or large tank waiting for him. but i would definitely go for it in the present! ull find that the gar will find it hard to get food when theres a large RTC hovering about.

Thats the other thing, my RTC just lays around on the bottom until I drop food in and close the lid as soon as he heres the lid shut he comes out, makes few passes around the tank then back underneath the driftwood, is he acting normal....??

yes, this is daytime behavior. Remember about 90% of all catfish species are nocturnal. Turn out the lights, and sit in front of your tank for 30 mins to let your night vision kick in. After you can see the fish swimming around(which they will do after lights out) throw the food in then. Much more exciting to watch them eat naturally after the lights go out. There might even be some fighting over food. Gar will be a noodle to the RTC in a few months though.

This is slightly off topic Necro but I reciently moved my TSN into the same tank as my RTC and now BOTH of them are a lot more active during the daytime. They really seem to enjoy each others company and are planning the untimely demise of the big oscar in their tank...

Sorry...please continue

That happens, my tsns use to school with my limas. It would swim with them and mirror all the same things they do, but now they are in the big pond, they just lay there with the rtc and jau. The channel cat is the most active cat I have that thing is just non-stop, makes me tired just watching it swim around. Second most active is my big hybrid he swims pretty much non-stop also.
