Hi I just got home from work to find my 6" RTC dead at the bottom of his tank. I have no idea why. He had a small nip on the top of his head from a managuense that was in his tank but apart from that no ideas. I tested the water and it was Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0 Ph 6.4, didn't test nitrate cuz I did a 50% water change yesterday. Are they normally quite hardy or are they like cichla, sensitive when they are young?
Any input appreciated, I'm really pissed I only bought him a week ago.

Look at the bright side, you are gonna have all of your other fish that much longer... Never trust a catfish...

could be a few reasons ,you only had him a week ,he could of allready had something that killed him, could be stress related due to new tank and then harrasment , or could of no liked the water change (what % did you change ) it could of been all the above , sorry for your loss ,its allways a bummer to lose a fish esp something like a rtc

i know how it feels to lose one mine died last month

I originally put the rtc in with my 5" cichla and it was fine and eating well but when it ate a firemouth that was in the tank I took him out for fear he might eat one of my cichla. I'm gonna guess stress from the jag was the cause. I did take the jag out of the tank but maybe the damage was already done.

I ended up losing some plecs after my water changes. I figured out that the water temp dropped too fast during the changes. Now I fill up a 55 gallon drum with water and heat it before I do a water change. No lost fish since doing this. Just a thought. My temps went from 78F to aroudn 60F within a few minutes. I would do a 40% water chnage in a 125 gallon tank.
