Hi all. im a noob to MFK and just wanted to say what an awesome place for knowledge and ideas! (thinking of starting my own monster aquarium build soon).
anyway on with the question: i have a 7" RTC and was told by 1 of my LFS that feeding them pieces of trout is ok. so i did. after about a week he bloated aout like a balloon. so i went to a different LFS and they said its just trapped wind because of the trout. they said that i shouldnt feed trout to RTC as its not good for them. so has anyone else fed trout to a RTC?

Trout is fine to feed if it is raw. What size tank is he in and are you doing water changes?

Trapped wind because of feeding trout? Meaning trapped air? If that's what you mean then it doesn't make sense to me. I don't see how giving him pieces of trout would make him bloated. I could see if you were giving him floating pellets. Most fish is fine to feed to them. Mine gets shrimp, flounder, tilapia, triggerfish, bluegills, etc. Don't feed him for a couple days and see if it goes away.

I<3fish: yes it was fresh, raw trout. and i do regular water changes and all water parameters are ok.

haywood: this was last week so bloating has gone back down now after 3 days of no food. just that it seemed like coincidence that it happened after feeding the trout. and LFS said trout is no good for them?

he gets a varied diet of prawns, mussel, bloodworm, white bait, salmon and trout.

if its not the trout thats the problem is it how much im feeding? he gets fed every other day and gets either:

3 medium sized mussel
OR
1 prawn (aprox 2")
OR
2 small white bait (aprox 2")
OR
2" X 1/2" piece of salmon or trout

At that size I was feeding him enough so that his belly wasn't completely flat, but wasn't bulging like crazy. When small you should feed them 2x a day. As they get older much less often, just bigger meals.
