anyone have info or links on how the operation is done and how to put the fish under with the clove oil for operation. my rtc has it mostly on one side and is starting to look like its getting harder for him to breathe. it comes and goes but if i can get rid of it ill be happy

going to try the calcium suppliment and massage first

idk if its much help but i preformed a gill curl surgery on my cuz's arow..

we took an empty 20 gal and filled it with the old tank water.. then netted the arow and put it in the 20.. we mixed little bags of water with 5-6 drops of clove oil and dumped it in the 20 with the arow.. we kept doing this until the arow was out but still breathing..

then we took it out of the 20 and placed it on a wet towel. just cut the curled part of the gill at a slight angle using sharp surgical scissors.. its optional to sand the cut part to make it smooth but we decided time was more important..

afterwards we threw the arow back into the main tank alone and dosed with primafix or melafix cant remember which.. we continued to dose til the big bottle was gone..

now a few months after the surgery and the arow is curl free :D

how much clove oil did u use and how bout after how long does it take to wear off when they are back in their tank

I was at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago back in November and saw that they too had done gill surgery on their only Asian Arowana. I think it was a Cross back Red Tail Gold. It was a beast of a fish. About 2 feet long and really fat. At least 4 inches thick. It was clear that they did both gills. The fish acted fine even with the membrane completely cut off and I can see the actual gills when the plates were closed. I'm sure the membrane will grow back in time. I don't know why the fish got the curls when it was in a very large tank. How big is your tank? I mean it won't do you any good if you risk the surgery and to have it happen again, right?

I don't know if you can send them an email for advice. These guys are usually pretty good about giving advice to serious hobbyists. I'll upload a picture of the fish later.

Good luck.

overall i think it took around 25-30 drop of clove oil.. the key is to mix it in a separate bag as it doesnt really mix with water by itself.. the fish was swimming an hour after the surgery..
