I've been reading into rtc having problems with gill curl, I am slowly saving up for a tank big enough for one! Its taking a whille, untill that day i will not be owning one, sensible thing to do I belive!

How do you stop this happening or is it just one of these things thats come? I'm sure it would be down to water?

Any input back on this? I would be greatful.
Thanks,
Dav.

Anyone?

Water quality and and space is the cause of gill curl in most, if not all cases. Clean water, space and a healthy diet will keep your soon to be RTC happy.

Gill curl from my understanding is almost alway poor water quality. There is always a possibility one could have a genetic defect but that would ne really rare I think. Long as you have good water quality and feed him good youll be fine. I Commend you on waiting for the tank first. Always glad to see someone being a responsible keeper with a rtc. I had one in the past that grew to a 14" and just dropped dead one night for no apparent reason. I was so mad, I never got another. They are awesome cats. BTW what size tank are you planning, and are you gonna build or just buy one?

Cheers for the replys guys, that's pretty much sumed it up for me & i'm looking at 8foot by 40inch (wide) 30inch (high), i'll see how he gets along in that, i've got the room for a pond just want to keep him in a tank for a whille, as my front room show piece ;) Due to the cost of it & the missues not liking the idea of seeing me pay just over 2000 notes for a tank, she's agree'd to let me slowly save up, after buying her a new car & a holiday! although I'm putting more away then she knows ;) Don't no why she wouldn't let me take it out of my savings!! Haha!

Also i'm tempted to go pick one up but ino the cost over everything its going to be, brought myself 2 x FX5's that set me back alot! Then need to by how meany heaters! Convert the area & then buy the tank & stock up on food for him!! I shall not have one untill my tank is here & i don't think he'll be having any tank mates eather, mabey a plec & some dither fish when hes over 12". Although I will be building the tank stand as a chippy by trade, this is simply a doddle...I hope, got to ask about a bit more due to weight,ect.. I'll do a thread up when done about how i build it, ect... But as I say it's going to be a whille.
