Ive had my 3 incher just over 2 weeks hardly seen him since I got it due to lots of hiding spaces I noticed earlier as I got a glimps of him one of his gills is a little different to the other could this be a start of gill curl anyways to stop it, water params are fine. Or could it just be a birth defect.

Some are born with it, when I got my first one at 4-5 inches, he had it on his right gill if you were looking at him face to face, you can spend a lot of money and have the surgery done, not sure of how that goes, or you can keep you water pristine, feed the correct things and it could go away on its own just like "growing out if it" sometimes they won't. My rtc is now 15-16" and has very little at the top of his gill you have to get close to the tank to be able to see it. I don't know a whole lot of what you could do, I'm not "mr. Rtc expert" but that's just my experience. Good luck!!

A photo would help. What you think may or may not be so.

Not that you should think about removing it at all, but a YouTube search will get you plenty of vids of keepers cutting off the curled gill cover ends themselves, mostly on asian aros but some catfish and RTCs too. I am saying it just so you know there is this resource.

AFAIK, in vast majority of cases, it is bad water but usually never happens with such small guys like yours - it is when the RTC gets too big for its tank/biofilter/aeration. Genetic indeed occurs too.
