I live in cincinnati and i was think about setting up a pond to get some monster fish, the only thing is that it is cold in the winter and i was wondering that if the the pond was 5-6 ft deep do you think a rtc, tsn or any other monster cats could survive through the winter.

yep, if you could keep the pond at 78 degrees...... but your looking at a $$$$$ electric bill

You might be able to keep them out there is you put a big heater and cover the pond REALLY good. I talked with a man who keeps angel fish through the winter in memphis. He's got a small pond which he heats and covers with a hot tub cover but i recomment you buy a big rubbermaid tub and bring them in the garage

If you cover the pond and keep it at 72, the RTC should be okay

yea.. 72 is kinda cold but wont kill a RTC.

yep. 72 prolly wont even hurt him. however dont ever let it get below 68. then your royally screwed

I use to keep my hybrid outside during the winter here in montana, and it gets down to -40 F. I build a box around a cattle trough, and stuffed tons of insulation in it. Then I built an insulated lid for it also. Each half of the lid weighs around 75 lbs, and most of that is insulation. The walls are lined with styro insulation boards 2" thick, every crack in those and the wood is lined with great stuff foam, then there is double thick 18" insulation all around it. I kept the water at 82 F during one of the worst winters on record here. After the water was up to temp it barely ever turned on. I used one 500 watt titanium heater to keep it at that temp. Hope this helps some. If you are going to dig it into the ground you could bury a box, line that with styrofoam insulation then, the house batting, then a liner over top of that. You'd have to make an insulated lid or get a second hand jacuzzi cover.
