My RTC is about a year old and has begun making noise. When making it, he looks as if he is enhaling food. Makes this move repeatedly and in rapid successionm, anywhere from a few times to several. It sounds as if you are throwing bbs against the glass. To hear for yourself, put your hand in your tank and snap your fingers as hard as possible. Tried researching the net for info but no help found. Has anyone ever heard this before, or know what it is?

Welcome to Monster Fish Keepers!
I've heard this from an rtc before on a video (Think it was river monsters episode, but it was also above water), as well as a local saltie fish called a spotted grunter due to grunting noise when caught. Not sure but I think if I remember correctly this is made by teeth grinding together in throught, could be wrong though.
So I reckon it's something to do with stress situations although recently there was a study done on red belly piranhas where they isolated 3 distinctive sounds made by shutting jaws and each of these had a different message to other piranhas, like: stay away.

Are there other rtc in the tank?

No other fish in tank. Has the 150 all to himself. He does gunt, as you say, when out of the water. I'm not sure but it shouldn't be stress. Water tests out good. Do weeky water changes and he is fed every other day or so. When he makes the noise he can be lying on the bottom of hovering mid water. No specific pattern to any of it.
