I'm making a decision on which to buy and wanted to know the opinions of the people who know them best on MFK. Please include WHY you picked what you did or would pick if you were me.

if your planning on having one of these fish then i take it you know all about the size they get and the tank/pond they will need . i ended up with 2 rtc and 1 rtcxtsn. if you have the room to look after these fish why not get one of each

I like them both but Im kind of going for a one of each type look.

1 aro
1 gar
1 oscar
1 pacu
1rtc or rtcxtsn

its your choice which one you prefer,RTC are massive eaters and can grow to 1' in a matter of no time when fed properly but their colouring makes them stand out but Rtcxtsn, mine is growing very slow but they have the spotted markings like TSN so its a matter of which looks better

Most of the fish you have listed will make a great meal for either one you chose unless at a very large size, and the oscar no matter the size will be a snack eventually. Speaking from experience. People use to bring their oscars to me and I had no choice but to use them as feeders sometimes. I would let the owners know what I was going to do with them. I told them that if the oscars lived then I would feed them and try to keep them healthy, but if they got eaten it was just the natural order of things in my pond. I think my 36-38" rtc x tsn ate at least 3 oscars over 12", a jaguar cichlid that was over 13", a 16" knife, a 13" gar, a 20" snake(oops!), tried to eat my rtc when the rtc was 24". Couldn't get the rtc's head all the way in his mouth so just injured him really bad. Just a word to the wise. Good luck with whatever your choice, but make sure you give the other fish a few years head start on growing as rtc can reach 18"+ in their first year if properly cared for.

I prefer the rtc since its more active, well my 2 were. I tried all of the hybrids and mixes of these catfish and tested which cat i like better. It was pretty interesting observing their behavior and feeding habits. But its on you to test it out :)

agree. if u take gar and oscar out, maybe it'll work, and they need to be about the same size. keyword here is MAYBE.

but i prefer rtc as i like original fish, just feel more original... lol...

Thanks once again guys I think Ill go for the rtc and forget the oscar... My gars getting to be around 8-9 inches so ill wait a month or two before getting a 1-2 inch rtc and putting him in my grow out before he goes in the big tank w/ the other big guys(:

I loved my RTC. I'm not a huge fan of hybrids. If you want, get one of each, RTC and TSN. Grow them out a little. I'm all about originality like one of the other members said. just be aware, the will eat anything they think they can swallow. This included two of my plecos. Even if they just ate a full meal, don't trust it. Mine ended up being by himself because his one week binge included four oscars, two plecos, one channel cat, albino channel cat, two jack dempsey, and a small peacock bass. All of which lived together just fine till the RTC snapped. I'm all for them, just make sure its by far the smallest fish and stays that way as long as possible.

Definately go with the RTC. I love my RTC so much! I've never had a fish that behaved like he does. He's 21 inches and he's only 10 months old. So just be aware of how rapid they grow. But if you are going with the RTC i guarantee you that you wont be disappointed!
