My RTC is about 4 inches...

I have been having difficulties with the heater in one of my grow out tanks. It was up to 82 degrees...I made a small adjustment I thought and now the tank is at 76 degrees.

I was gone for about 3 hours...so the temp drop took place over this space of time. The temp is still at 76. What do I need to do? Is my little catfish going to have any problems after the temp drop?

That is somewhat of a large drop and could cause stress. RTCs are pretty hardy. I would say keep an eye on it, but don't be overly concerned. Certainly don't feed it for 24 hours just in case it is stressed. If you have stress guard or something similar, you could add it. If not, don't worry about it.

Should I leave the temp where it is currently at?

I'd just leave the temp where it's at... I'd also look into a new thermometer if it's jumping like that. I had one that did the same thing and i just went and got a new one...

The little dude made it fine. Thanks for the help.

My heater broke on my hybrid last winter in the garage. He was in 52 f. water temps for probably 3 days while I was at work, lucky for the back up heater. He did fine.
