Whats the best substrate for this "little" guys? and i was looking at putting one in my 40 gallon breeder for like maybe a year? will this be ok or should i wait till i get an indoor pond for him??? thanks guy always a great help

unless your RTC is like under 2" that 40g will become bery tight in the next few months. But to answer the question I would go with bare bottom.
They poop too much, less substrate is better, and then set a powerhead aimed at the bottom to bring the poop up to your filter
BB would be good if i didnt have Rays id do BB with all the cats i have ya as for a 40gal my RTC grew out a 55Gal from 3" within 2 months my friend.
I got my rtc at 2" at the end of may he is now at 12" long and about 3" wide. that 40 will work for about the first month and a half maybe more if your lucky but no more then 4 months. As for substrate I use pool filter sand and have no problems with it. the only thing to watch out for with substrate is your rtc will eat any rock that fits in its mouth. as well as any fish.
Like other said, this catfish grows fast. If your looking for a grow out tank, a 150-180 may be a better choice.
i would wait till you have a pond done the cat hit the 2 foot mark in a year 3' foot mark in year to a year and ahalf
