Are the true red asian aro's completely banned from being on US soil? In a magazine it showed someone got caught smuggling a dozen or so across the border on a plane and he got caught. Now the magazine says that the Aro's were donated to a public aquarium. Is this what happens to illegal aro's when confiscated or are they typically Destroyed???

Thansk guys

All Asian Aros (formosus and newly renamed color variants) are illegal in the US.

Confiscated species (not just aros) can be offered to public aquariums. Those fish are either placed on display, traded with other institutions, or euthanized for scientific study.

Huh well imagine that, i figured the stupid government would euthenize the animals. Its cool theyre allowed to be displayed at public aquariums. They must love the FREE oddballs. no pun intended.

More than likely. I don't know if you subscribe to Tropical Fish magazine, I think last month there was an article about asian aro's. Back in 2004 some asian aro's were confiscated in NY, and the FWS agent asked a known aquarist (father and daughter team) from Brooklyn Aquarium to look after the asian aro's which they did. But after the case was closed about a year or so later, the agen asked what the "fish nannies" wanted to do with the asian aro's. They asked to keep the biggest one, and the agent checked with her supervisor, and said its either all the aro's or none at all!?! :WHOA: Shame, the nannies didn't have the space for it so they gave it up, and the aro's were supposedly to be given to either an aquarium or some institution.

But leading to the "fish nannies" were the fact that when these asian aro's are confiscated and give to other aquariums/institutions that they would die within a month or so, due to lack of knowledge of taking care of the aro's or high stress from the shipping (smuggling) and transport to the aquariums.
