Hope this is the right place to post... was out at the local Chinese buffet tonight when I noticed they had a new tank, wandering over to have a look,I saw that it was a roughly two foot long rtg, on its own in a bare tank. Am I right in thinking that the 5-6 foot long tank by about 1.5 feet wide is far too small for one of these fish? The silver at the fish shop is in a grow out that is 8 feet long. Any ideas on how to point out to them that their fish could do with a bigger tank and some way of doing young kids hitting on the glass? I mean I might be totally wrong size wise with it, if so please tell me so I can stop worrying about it :( it was such a beautiful looking fish (never seen this breed before) and I felt so bad for how cramped it looked, esp when turning round...

Now I am not being racist or anything but the Chinese restaurants never house fish correctly, well, at least not from what I have seen. They only have the fish for people to look at, not to house them correctly. Same goes for Pacu, another miss treated fish.

Arowana should have a tank at least 3x's the length of the fish by 1.5x's the length for the width. So a 3 foot fish should have a 9'x4.5 foot tank. The height is not as important. I know many people to state that my tank size is "too large" but I do not see that as being possible for these highly active fish.

Thought it was too small... they seemed so proud of it when their certificate of authenticity and saying it was housed "correctly". I'm guessing there is nothing possible to do to get them to house it properly? And I see what you mean tbh, or local fish and chip shop have a little cichlid tank which is hugely overstocked... Thanks for answering anyway :) I would rather have a fish in too large a tank than too small

Different people have different ideas of what's right and what's wrong

In Asia its common practice to get a gold aro RTG or XBACK in a 4x2x2

For me a 4x2 is to small and a gold shouldn't be kept in anything less than a 6x2 but that's just my opinion

Gold Asian aros normally grow to 2ft max unlike Asian reds which reach 3ft

I think 6x3x2 is perfect..But minimum should be 5X2.5X2

It takes a gold a long time to hit 2ft

For a adult gold 7x2.5 should be the min

Reds take ages to grow and reach 3ft
Mine was about 28" when it went into the 1000gal with a drip so loads of room and good water
Its been in there 3.5years now and its only 30-32

Any idea what it took to hit the 28" Richard?
Do you bother with all these tanning lights?
Do you find it looking red or orange? I've never seen one in person which wasn't actually orange...

Mini is a chilli red so it was never going to be deep red
Its more of a metallic orange

I have never bothered with tanning lights

A nan light was given to me last year and I took a few videos and pics with it but sold it soon after

I feel the constant light can't be good for any fish

To get to 28" probably took 5 years from the tag date on the cert
