I have a 180g with 4 RTMs. 2 recently formed a pair, stunning! The two spares are 1 male and 1 female, not a pair tho, The spare female is the same size as the pair, the spare male much smaller. The breeding male of the pair is becoming increasingly aggressive. I thought he would go for the spare male, but he goes for the spare female. So much so, that she stays in hiding, while the spare male just goes about his business as per normal. I am going to rehome the spare male, but was hoping to keep the spare female. But I dont think I'll be able to keep her in the same tank as the breeding male for long. My question is, why does the breeding male attack the spare female and not the spare male? Is there any reasoning behind this? Would this behaviour be common for all cichlids?

not sure on this but my guessing would be that the spare male if much smaller if still too small to be viewed as a threat but more than likely will become a target once he puts on some size, generally spares of any cichlid can not be kept in the same tank as a pair normally will not tolerate others of the same species
