Is it fine to rubberband the claws on a 9'' red swamp crayfish? They ony use the big claws for attack and defense right?

Why would you do that?

Heh. I had to keep it in one of the tanks overnight. I ended up using a breeder net. :D

I guess you could do it, but not if he has just molted, and not too tight, tight enough just for his claws not to hurt any thing.

I can't stress enough about Making sure he hasn't molted, the rubber band WILL Hurt him, After he molts his exoskeleton is left all soft because it hasn't formed yet, So if he has molted you'll end up having to use a bucket.

actually when a crayfish molts it has to re harden its shell.(exoskeleton)
they use the gastroliths that they have stored in their body to reharden it and it takes between 24-48 hours.

They are a jello like substance right after a molt and even picking them up out of the water from where they are more boyant will crush their bodies and organs under its own body weight if it is a larger one.
I agree, be extremely careful after a molt.
