I use a rubbermaid container for my sump and was wondering if it was possible for the heater to melt the plastic? The side that my heater touches gets very hot when it's running. There's no signs of damage but the heater came with plastic suction cups and it said not to use them around the heating coil. Has anyone experienced any problems using the two?

Could it? if it gets hot enough and touches the plastic directly. Use some of those suction cup stand offs that usually come with the heaters to keep it away fromt he plastic. You will be fine.

I use suction cup clips on the coil of my heater without issue. I find it hard to not use it there if you want a stable heater.

buy or make a heater guard

Most people don't set their heaters above 85 deg tops. There's no way a heater's going to get hot enough to melt a plastic rubbermaid tub. It would have to get well over the boiling point (212 deg). That's just not going to happen.

I have melted the bottoms on 2 Rubbermaid trash cans that I use for ageing w/c water.

I hope it never happens. Although, I have my heater set at 78 F and the heating coil itself certainly exceeds that temperature. I have touched the outside of the plastic while it was running and I couldn't keep my hand on it, it was so hot.

The suction cups on heaters suck, plain ans simple. When I'm puting heaters in a sump, I get a piece of acrylic, drill some holes in it, get nylon screws that fit the hole in the back of the heater clips and screw the clips onto the acrylic piece. It holds the heaters securely up off the bottom.
