Hey everybody, I just picked up my first RRS a few weeks ago and I love this guy. The colors on him are awesome and have gotten a lot deeper since I picked him up. He's about 6" long and is living it up in a 90 gallon aquarium. Now really, is there any chance I can keep more then one in this thank? I've seen videos on the net of people keeping multiples in one tank. Not to mention my friend has had 7 gold spilo's, also about 6" long, in a 55 gallon. What's the deal with these Ruby Reds? How come everything I read on them says NO, but it seems like it can be done? Any secret formulas out there? I have read that they can be kept with Red Bellies. Any tips on these guys would be much appreciated...

if you value the fish you have then it's best to keep it solo. sometimes ppl have luck to keep mac (aka gold spilo) in a group but it's not always a success and often requires trails and error to tweak everything right.
can you try to keep your rrs in a group? if you have the money to burn sure but do prepare that there will most likely be aggression towards each other and have additional tanks ready so you can separate them as needed. lower the temperature would help a little bit on the aggression, lots of current in the tank and add bunch dither fish in there may help as well. if you do decide to give it a try please keep us posted on the result and best of luck

Thanks for the heads up on lowering the temp. I think I might try it out, just a little nervous because these guys aren't the least expensive fish on the market. I have to say I haven't found them to be as pissy as rhoms. So I'm really eager to give it a shot. Oh and for that kind of investment, you better believe I'm going to document everything I can, lol.. Thanks again..

I figured my 90 gallon would be a good place to start. It'll give them 45 gallons each to roam around. If that won't do, I have access to a 110 but that's my limit at the moment.

my rrs is pretty nasty. I wouldn't mix them with any other p.

DO NOT mix the fish. Rrs will kill each other and in the end you will end up with at least one dead piranha

Don't mix them, but what are you basing that on? I've read they actually live a type of parasitic life style with in other piranha shoals. But at the same time I've read you can get away with 40 gallons per fish, being that they don't get too large. Who knows, but I'm sure where there's a will, there's a way, lol.. Thanks for all the info.. I really do appreciate it..

40g per fish doesn't mean they will be happy with sharing your 90g with an other rrs. they feed on fins, tails, small fish and such in the wild, there are a lot more fins available and a lot more space for the prey fish to get away with just some minor fin nips. but in your 90g there are no where to go so it's more likely to have things go bad, even they don't fight to the death the constant stress from the more dominate one would likely to stress out the weaker one, if too stressful it might even kill it. add a lot of dither fish in the tank if you can to help divert their attention from each other. I remember someone tried with few rrs in a 125g and it wasn't pretty until he added some rbp to help spread the aggression, it was working for a bit, not sure what happened now.
the footprint of the tank is more important than the water volume in this case, say if a 80g with same dimension of two 40B (6ft long) would be a better tank for this compare to a 4ft 90g.
