I have a big ruffled sword, which grew quite quickly into a beautiful plant. I have a 26" deep tank, and several of the leaves made the surface, at first I didn't mind. Some of my fish, like the leaf fish for example, enjoyed the canopy effect...

The first time it grew one of the thick "chutes" I thought that was cool too, as that went to the surface also...

However-
Long story short. Now I have 3 of the thicker "chutes" growing to the surface which sort of create a thick canopy at the top of the tank, the leaves in the mid zone of the aquarium are thinner and not near as attractive, since the whole plant is now spread across the surface. The leaves that break the surface, become covered with algae eventually anyway once they break the surface. My tank is algae free for the most part, and it still grows fairly well...

But how do I trim this thing? I don't mind a little bit of surface coverage, but I want to get those broad green leaves back in the aquarium? and what exactly is the thicker stemmed part?

I apologize for my ignorance with plants, I have only been growing them for about a year. They grew really easy for me, but obviously I don't know what I am doing?

Thanks...

I guess the only way would be to trim the huge leaves, right from the base. The large chutes I think are use to break the surface and flower to reproduce, not positive on that though. I have an amazon sword that is taking off insanely; I'm sure I'll find my self with a similar problem soon.
