Is there any benefit of running 2 canisters honestly or is just consider a waste to do?I am curious, since I keep seeing mix reviews on how people do it and have no issues, while others saying the opposite.Any opinions on this?
Depends on many things, size of tank and filters, stocking level, water change schedule and amount etc.
I like to have a second filter on each tank just for redundancy in case one quits but if the current filter is adequately sized for the aquarium and bioload then it is not really needed. Tell us more about your setup and we will have more of an opinion.
I have a 125 gallon fish tank that is running a marineland penguin 350 and a marineland magnum 350 right now.As for fishes I have South American Cichlids and african cichlids, biggest one of the tank is a 10 inch Tiger Oscar, while the rest are 6 inches and below, ranging from Jack Dempseys, green terror, firemouth, severum, black convict,4 OB peacocks which I received those as a birthday gift actually.
I run 2 cannisters on my 120 gal. discus tank. besides the great filtration, I have a good deal of money swimming in there. I can rest knowing that if one of the filters breaks down, my fish will be ok. but yeah, two cannisters on a 29 gal. would be kind of silly.
Yeah,I feel that I have made good investment towards my Cichlids,if running another canister will benefit me even more,I am willing to run another magnum 350 then.
Redundancy, extra bio, extra mech, extra turnover....
I run multiple filters on all my tanks just for insurance purposes. Could you get by with one? Absolutely. But what happens if that filter fails? I like the pom multiple filters gives me. The only negative I can think of of it requires more power...
Doesn't have to be the same type either. Sponge filters with air pumps are great auxiliary filters. Cheap and effective
