just wondering if this is ok to do. my lfs has a canister on sale for 50 bucks, problem is, it is only rated for 40 gallons. i have a 55 gallon tank, i just wanted to know if this setup would work, or if the canister would be enough by itself.

unless you are understocked and want to do a lot of water changes use the HOB as well. i run both on all my tanks. its like insurance. one filter poops you have one to run on tell the morning or first chance to fix/replace it.

i have three jack dempsey/texas hybrids, 2 plecos, an afircan knife, and a pictis cat. i know they all get big, but i only plan on keeping two of the jd hybrids once there full grown, the rest im gonna take back fr store credit. i just cant pass up a canister for only 50 bucks, and there brand new. i think im gonna try it. o and with you running both, how does it help, like does the water stay real clear, are the levels ok. and whats the bb like.

yeah my water stays great. i dont know what bb is?

Run them both. My last two tanks ran both. My 150 has 2-350 Biowheels and a 350 canister filter running. all together rated for 350 gallons at 1050gph

yeah its good to be on the over filtered side most of the time.

I run two HOBs and two Fluval 405s on my 125 and have never had any water quality issues.

can't hurt to have the extra filtration.... I would run both of them your stock load is good so 2 is better than one...
