I have 3 filters on my 75... an emp (400 or whatever the dual one is), a small biowheel (like for a 40 gal max, it was free), and a 24 wat UV sterilzer.

I was thinking of only running the smaller biowheel and uv at night only... I don't like the bubbles of the small biowheel (it doesn't sit down all the way) and I see no reason for the uv to be running 24/7.

Is that alright to do or will it mess up my filters?

I keep a powerhead with a quickfilter attachment filled with polyfill or a bonded filter pad. It's plugged into the light socket so i only have it running at night, mainly for water polishing.

So if anything i'd just hook it up to the UV. There could be a way to fix your other problem though, can you explain more about the problem?

I can see that being detrimental to the bb in your biowheel but doing this with the UV should be fine.

hmmm forgot about that...

The small biowheel isn't made for a 75 gallon. The lip of the 75 gallon is too thick for it, so the filter doesn't "sit" down into it. Therefore the water comes from a higher point, splashes, and makes more bubbles. The bubbles annoy the hell out of me.

Zip tie a scrubbie or some foam pad to the outlet are of the smaller bio wheel. You'll have to make a couple small holes to get the zip ties through but it should help with noise since the water wont be splashing right into the tank. It will give you a little extra filtration too.

:headbang2 FTW

You're going to want to run your UV all the time. Sterilized water becomes disease ridden quickly as the bacteria, virii, and parasites have no nutrient competition from beneficial and neutral bacteria.

Now that doesn't mean it WILL happen, it just means you're adding more potential risk for sickness.

This is how I silenced my AC110; the waterfall was too noisy and this works great for fine mechanical filtration (the sheet of filter floss gets incredibly disgusting after about a week), and it won't reduce the flow of the filter.
