Theres a tank a 125 gallon tank on my local craigslist that comes with a a russian tortiouse and I was wondering if I could get some information on them, such as there max size, temperment, feeding, heating/lighting, and such. Also how much do one of these guys run? thanks in advance!

Tortoises start at $100.00 and up I've seen rarer ones for thousands of dollars. The russian is a fairly cheaper maybe 120 150. The are more apt for colder wheather (I think the are from Afganistan area). In the wild they hibernate 9 months out of the year but you have to be careful if you choose to make them hibernate in captivity. I think they get around 8 or 9 inches. Are personable, and recognize their owner. I can't remember if they live to around the 50 year mark or longer. But there is a ton of info on the web

Well they sound like a pretty cool tort's , but I will defentantly have to read a little more before I decide on purchaseing, It does seem like a steal though for the tort, a lepard gecko, a 125Gallon tank, metal stand, along with the driftwood and other decorations that come with it for one 150 bucks!

Thats beyond a steal even if the animals are in poor condition which they probably are for that price. If you do get them don't put the tortoise in the tank unless you black it out. being able to see out but not go through the glass stresses them out.

as far as price goes $140 seems kind of steep, ive seen them go for as low as $10 but $40-$60 is more average

I was planning on getting a rubermaid tub to put the gecko and the tort in (seprate ones of course) and use the tank as an aquarium:grinno:(if its usable as one) my only problem now is convincing my dad to let me get a reptile because he hates them:(

i had two russian tortoises for 8 years. they make really good pets and are pretty hardy.
mine have hibernated every other year or so... depending on the temperature at my home. last year, i gave it away to a family with little kids. i think one of them died somehow and the other is still going strong. i got mine on sale for $40 or $50, hard to remember cause it was so long ago, but it was around there.

Thats a good thing that there hardy as this would be my first tort.

Can anyone tell me wha they eat?

they need a diet made up of almost entirely greens, stuff like dandielions, collards, kale, romaine, etc. (no iceberg)
