I realized that on the bottom of my in-tank filter are nails. Wouldn't they rust underwater and foul the water?

Yep. If you keep up with your water changes, then the iron & iron oxide leaching into the water will be minimal. If water changes occur every six months, then there will be problems.

Now the real question: Why are there nails in your filter?

its a good place to keep your loose nails chompers you can't loose them there.... what kind of in-tank filter is this??? got a pic???

I'm guessing he means exposed screws, not nails.

Unless this is really old school and made of wood. I don't think you can hold plastic together with nails. I could be wrong though.

Oh yeah, I used to always keep nails in my skimmer just in case the aquarium needed a patch.

:grinno: lol

sorry screws.. it's the whisper in-tank filter 40i.
it's to connect the bottom part and top part.

so i'm safe?

ya the screws are fine as they are not bare and there shouldnt be any problems with them rushing.

ok thanks.

it is exposed to water though.. if you mean by bare. like since the bottom part of the filter is underwater..

i'll contact tetra(or was it hagen??)
