I had been looking for a South American Lungfish and a friend recently picked one up for me. I should be getting it within a few weeks. It is about 8" long and is already eating bits of shrimp. I was looking for this species because it is supposed to be compatable with other fish. I do have a few questions:

I understand they can reach 4', though most books say closer to 3' in captivity. I was planning to keep it in a 135 for now. Will this house it for life? I ask because if it is flexable like an eel it could easily turn around and the tank is 6' long.

I was told it mostly likes small bits of food. Will it eat smaller fishes? Currently there are 20 black tetras, 2 baby Oxydoras niger (4"), a Megladoras (7") and a Garra Pingi Pingi (4") in the aquarium. I would worry about it eating an O. niger and dying as a result. (I can move the tetras if necessary.) If it is not likely to eat smaller fishes, is it otherwise a peaceful species?

The other option would be housing it with my bichirs (P. del. and ornat.). The largest is about 12", so it might attack the lung.

Lastly, is it likely to destroy a planted tank? The first tank is planted, the bichirs' tank is mostly rockwork.

Thanks

Both of mine never so much as nip at smaller fish (2' and 3') long. I put my 3'er in the 135a few threads back so we could see how big he looked lol. Normally it's in my 220.

Hey, that's great news, I see the African ones somewhat regularly here but have never wanted one. This will be the first SAL and it's nice it is a community fish!:) Your lungfish looks great!

speaking on behalf of my lung it will completely destroy all plants, topple any rock formation and have a good go at breaking then eating any plastic or resin based ornament

so far the only thing it tolerates is two terracotta connecting pipes

and that is a good looking fish up there, mine is similar in length but has larger forelimbs and really pronounced patterns

Is this a South American lung or one of the African species?
