what do you think the minimal tank req for this guy is? Many say 90-100 gal but fish shops keep them in 30gals for very long periods of time. I was thinking of having 4 x 50 gals stacked in my office consisting of fresh water tropical fish.

I wanted to do a solo sand + congo puffer tank, a heavily planted tank (maybe), a S. Elongatus or maybe a caliba or two (I think a single elongatus would be pushing it at 50gal), and prehaps my red ear sliders and cooters.

all the tanks would have overflows and a sump so the heavily planted tank would help remove nitrates and nitrites, the heaters would be in the sump and id over rate filtration so the water quality will be good, no heaters or filters will clutter the tanks either.

I can also get a pair of wild caught true green terrors for 70$ local, my fish guy usually cuts me deals so probably 60-65.

sand puffer, 2x green terror, planted tank, s elongatus
if the heavily planted tank wont benefit much maybe a feeder tank or my turtles instead but turtles, feeders and puffers make a considerable amount of waste.. hmm

elongs need lots of swimming room, a 50 gal just won't provide enough space, i would say that the bare minimum for an elong would be a 75 gallon.

if you are doing 50 gallon tanks, you are gonna be stuck with some of piranhas from the serrasalmus genus or possibly a single natt, a caribe or piraya would outgrow that small of a tank within a year. you could probably put an irritans, sanchezi, maculatus, or eigenmanni in there for life, you can start some of the other serras in that size tank, but they would eventually need a bigger home.

yeah i kinda just want to have 4 50gal tanks with perm displays

:(

2 green terrors would probably be pushing it too.. time to make a post in the chilid area! :D

prehaps i could make it a 100 gal and 2 x 50 gal or 100gal and 4 x 25 gal depending on what i decide to put in.

do s. elongatus like heavily planted tanks? a lot of the ones ive seen are fairly bare but other piranha like shelter/hiding spots.

Min tank size would be 75g....but prefer 6ft tank long because of Elongus are fast swimmer. If you can put sand or gravel with havily plants tank would be nice. Elong can be one of the most aggressive piranha if kept properly. Here check this link out. I like these kind of Elong set up.

This how you train piranha to get aggressive.

As for the 50g...your best bet would go with Serra. Sanchezi or Irritan. It could live in there for life.

I like the look of sand with relatively empty tanks

yeah if i get a rhom or a elong ill go 90 gal+ I kinda want a square rimless tank 36x36x16 at 90gals but it would be better to get a longer tank for fast swimmers. :(

what kind of tank do you have your 15" rhom in? I don't know much about the non rhom/elong/pygo piranhas I may not do this stacker idea
