One of the stores in my area has a nice four inch S. Elongatus thats been for sale for quite some time and I am thinking about bringing it home one of these days,I dontknow much about them but I would like to know what tankmates would be compatible if any,any advice would be appreciated.

From the Sticky:

Scientific Name: Serrasalmus elongatus
Common Names: Elongated Piranha, Elong, Pike Piranha.
Distribution: In many different types of waterways in Venezuela/Colombia and Amazonian Brazil.
Size: 10 inches (Captive), 14 inches (wild)
Captivity: This is one of the most active and fast swimming of the species. Therefore they need at least 100 gallons (or more) to themselves and a very strong current to swim against. A temperature of 24-30C, and pH of 5.5-7.5 is required.
Personal Comment: This is normally a very aggressive piranha and very bold once settled. Very efficient filtration and a very strong current is needed to keep this fish in good health and active.

Tank mates? Well, 0. He will kill anything you put in there. From what I gather that is one of the most aggresive Ps out there. The type that even chase your finger on the glass. I think 75 Gal is adequate.l I have never owned on though.

This is what I suspected, even though I have several tanks it is hard to devote one large tank to just one fish but some of them are starting to grow on me so I will eventually get one.

Cepo thanks for pointing me toward the identification sticky at the top of the page,I didnt notice it before.

I, too, am in the same situation. One of my LFS has a 6"er and I REALLY want to get it, but just don't have a free tank and don't want any more. I don't mean to detract from YOUR post, but how long could a 6"er stay in a 40 breeder or does it need a 75 at that size?

i honestly dont think it gets that big so it could house it for life if im not mistaken?
either way a 75 is a great start
i was told i copuld keep it in a 40 gallon for a long time when i was concidering getting one
as for caring:
no tankmates
not even a pleco.... these are one of the most aggresive species ive ever seen. i wouldnt even stick my hand in the tank to clean with em in the tank
you must be very carefull
with the smaller ones even
and deffinatly with the bigger ones
but these are one of my favorite species
amazinf creatures

I hear 10 to 12 or so, depending on the sex. If I only had the room to set up one of the 55's I'm selling, I probably couldn't resist. I would never even try to put anything else in there with it, unless it was intended to be as food. After doing some looking around, I've decided this is the species of P I want to keep plus I've seen a couple around here so they're not too hard to find. Thx for the input and sorry for derailing.
