So, yesterday my 40gallon tank exploded at some point while I was gone for 10 hours. I returned home to unresponsive Senegal bichirs and 2 Raphael catfish and a completely flooded apartment. I quickly moved the 4 into my much smaller breeder tank (5 female guppies 1 male, and 3 cory doras). All four, thankfully, perked up and have been doing alright considering. In the first 5 hours, I noticed that my larger bichirs fins were torn and had deep red lines thru his fins. As of the next morning, today, the red lines disappeared and he was back to his more active self.

I donated the guppys and cory doras to my local fish store, they were very understanding that they all needed to be rehoused. It was way too many fish in a small tank but I just noticed that my larger bichirs fins have taken a serious turn for the worse. The red lines I noticed yesterday are gone, but the fins appear to be rotting away. I'm posting pictures because I've never deal with anything like this before. So whatever is going on, got significantly worse in a matter of 6 hours. Likely more pictures to follow.

My smaller bichir has no tares, and I actually pulled him out of the tank to inspect, cause he seems perfectly fine and I was super suspicious that he just got out of this unscathed.

Cont to keep the water super clean. Don’t feed for now. Wait till things calm and get better. Polys should get better and likely from the trauma. It’s a waiting game at this point.

The water right now is super messed up, I had to fish out all the other fish from the tank and it turned into a war. I had to uproot all of my plants to get at everything and it kicked up nonsense. I switched my fitler from my smaller one and added a dose of prime (i was told to help with whatever got kicked up into the water) to the one I had on my 40 gallon. I figured it would work a little better at getting the water filtered.

Polys are pretty hard to kill. Hope they recover!

Hopefully they recover, sometimes 40 gallons burst because there meant to handle reptiles not fish, so was your old 40 gal aquarium rated?

Yes sir! or at least, it was sold as an aquarium might not have been rated. My local store are being BAMF's and they are cutting me a deal on another tank. I refuse to get a new tank from petsmart. I have the worst luck with their products and fish.

There isn't a chance it could be fin rot? I've seen this stuff on other fish, but I haven't really read anything about it in regards to bichirs.

Could be, but with proper water changes and keeping stress to a minimum should go away, think of it like this: if your house suddenly caught flames and burned down you would be stressed and have a less strong immune system, but if you got a new house things could get less stressed

You bought the tank new and it busted? How long ago?

It's really unlikely it's fin rot if it just happened when your tank broke. More likely that they got damaged during the incident.

Reiterating pristine water and patience. Many polys have completely healed from torn fins, for example when another fish bites them. They're actually quite amazing that way.

Here you can follow my Delhezi's fin recovery from being attacked by another poly.
