hey guys!

i am supposed to be picking up a 5-6 inch s. sanchezi tomorrow afternoon and wanted to know more info on them. i did as much research on my own as i could, but didnt come up w/ too much. they get 6-7 inches and shouldnt be kept w/ other fish...including p's. is there anything else i need to know other than diet (i think i am going to start it out w/ tilapia and shrimp).

what is their disposition like?
is a water temp of low to mid 80's ok?
do they like cover or open tank space?

any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

thanks,

The diet should consist of any raw fish that has a white flesh such as talapia or catish and shrimp. The shell should be left on the piece shrimp. Shrimp will help bring the natural colors of the fish. Every now and then you could feed something a little more fatty like salmon , but not all the time. The temp should be around 78-80. Give the fish some cover and open space.

cool thanks for the info. im really looking forward to keeping him. is he very aggressive?

P's vary in aggressiveness from species to specie and fish to fish. S. Sanchezi do have the reputation of being a more of an aggressive species. They also are one of the most colorful Serras out there and one of my favs! Good pick up!

Oh and remember give a piranha time to come out of his shell so to speak. The most aggressive P I have ever owned was a big puss for about three months and then all of a sudden it was like night and day. He would slam the glass and chase your finger all day long and would even eat from my hand!

The fish in this pic is NOT a sanchezi...either a spilo or a mac...

JD7,
thanks for the advice. i agree...they are very colorful and beautiful indeed! i have never kept piranha before so i guess i am a noob in that aspect.

have you ever been bitten? will they attack your hand in the tank?

xjx, if your reading comprehension skills where on tonight youd notice I never said the fish in the picture was an S. Sanchezi, just that it was the most aggressive P I had ever owned.

demjor, of course any wild animal has the ability to bite. However with the P pictured once my hand was physically in the tank hed run and hide. Caution should always be used just in case. I have always said it and I firmly believe the most dangerous P is the one that has bitten through a net and is flopping around on the floor!!!

Good job xJx.
Thankyou so very much for your input. Really helps us out.

By the way JD, I went to Ash's store and got a Rhom last week. He had some fish that you'd probably be interested in...here's a pic. They were about 7'' in TL. If you'r ever in the Detroit area check em out.

Sry for the derail.

Sanchezi is a good pic for a medium sized serra. Like stated before...Give it time if purchasing young. As everybody is probably getting sick of me saying...I had a serra take almost a year to come out of his shell. A year is a long time to wait for a fish that hides all day and night. it was worth the wait when he came to be what he was.

A standard 55 gallon tank would be more than enough for a sanchezi for the life of the fish. You could get away with smaller. Water temp should be kept anywhere from 76-83 degrees. You need good filtration and water movement. Serrasalmus enjoy current.
Tilapia and shrimp are good choices. I feed my piranha different white fish, shrimp and squid as primary foods.
Some people believe that taking away a p's hiding places and keeping him in a bare tank forces him out in the open and eventually breaks him of his skittishness. Others think that giving the fish all the security it needs to come out his shell on his own is the best way. I've always done things the second way....not because I don't like the first way....because I hate having a bare tank in my living room.
