Hey guys,

I'm absolutely new to the world of SAs, and am just now thinking of setting up a SA tank.

I have a 46g tank, and I'm wondering how many, if any, SAs I can put in there.
Maybe a couple smaller ones like firemouths or GTs or acaras.

Any chance I could keep SAs in a 46? And if so, what is a general estimate to how many I could keep (with proper filtration and frequent water changes)?

Thanks in advance!

He pretty much covered it. Maybe a female Jack Dempsey.

Lots you can do ... a pair of blue acaras, or keyholes, or dwarf acaras like curviceps. Apistos. Rams. Regani dwarf pike cichlids.

:iagree:

Most types of Rams (look up Bolivian Rams), most of the dwarf SA's. I wouldn't try any of the big ones (even a Salvini is pushing it, they prefer to be in bigger tanks. It's no fun having just one salvini and nothing else.)

I agree, the salvini can get big . . . I would stick to the smaller cichlids: firemouth, rainbow, convict, etc. . . . 46G sounds small for any of the acaras, especially GTs, but would be fine for the laetacara (dwarf acaras)

Q: do you know the tank dimensions? 46G is good to know, but it's also important to know if the tank is wide or tall . . . tall tanks are better suited to angels, for example, while acaras - - especially GT - - do better with a wide tank

Naw, I have plenty of dwarf cichlids, I'm looking to put some bigger ones in here. I forgot about salvinis, thanks for that.

The 46g is 36"x16"x20" I think. Its a bowfront.

How many of each could I put in?
Would 1 con, 1 firemouth and 1 salvini be too much already, or could I do two firemouths or two salvini?

There are different types of acaras if you are looking for an uncommon SA setup. Festivums, Geos or Gymnos, one large mild cichlid like a Severum , keyholes. What colors do you like?

You could do a pair of firemouths or a pair of cons probably, I wouldnt add a salvini to that mix to. There just not enough room to disperse the aggression.
