SA/CA dithers

Silver Dollars and Filament Barbs work well. I think you mean targets though not dithers. Dithers are fish that swim around in the open and help bring out shy cichlids from hiding. Targets are used to spread out the aggression amongst aggressive cichlids and should be very fast and evasive swimmers and be able to take abuse and bounce right back. That's how I always knew it anyway. Which do you need, dithers or target fish?

I recommend using some fast shoaling fish over adding more cichlids like convicts and firemouths. If you use cichlids, you have to count them as more cichlids which will claim territory and lessen the space for your other cichs. Filament Barbs are awesome lightning fast swimmers (not overly hyper-but fast when they need to be) that max out at 6" and shoal the tank...no territory of their own. Think half sized Tinfoil Barb but much faster and more attractive. Silver Dollars are a great choice too and the two work well together.

If your cichlids aren't large enough to eat them giant danios generally make good dithers/targets. They can reach about 6".

btw FM's dont make a good target/dither fish, convicts are tho

I wouldn't use either. Since they both can be territorial you wouldn't want to add more aggression to the tank. Thats what stupid schooling fish such as tinfoil barbs and what not work the best.

I just posted a thread similar to this about Silver Dollars as dithers. I added three yesterday, and plan on at least one more today. So far, my juvie SA/CA's haven't messed with them at all. Well, unless you count my gold saum and dempsey trying to school with the Silver dollars.....
