I had caves in my tank before I even had cichlids.. but when I started putting cichlids in my tank i kinda figured they would use them... I have never seen any of mine use them.. other fish do.. but not my pearsei's, chocoloates or rams. Is that an african cichlid thing to like caves or just a breeding thing?

Pearsei Cichlids aren't South American, they're Central American. Second, this is highly dependent on the species, size of the fish, décor, etc. I've keep Rams that loved their caves, and took refuge in them frequently. As for Chocolates and Pearsei, they're pretty large/open swimming fish, so it makes sense that they don't view caves as a necessity.

I put 2 big flower pots in my tank the other day in a tank with Vieja and a Midas. Only fish that goes in the pots is an Argentea. Most of the fish went in the cave after I put it in, but once they'd checked it out-they're done with that.

Guess as noted, its different each case. For me, its lots of different loaches and rainbow sharks that like the use them on a regular basis. I just think its cool to always see the same fish peeking out of their home all of the time.

my blood parrot loves a cave. if there's one available, he's got to wriggle his fat butt into it.

from what I hear, rams prefer plants to caves
