Hi All

I am busy setting up my 550L tank.

Thinking of doing a community of the more docile/placid SA cichlids.
Is it do-able?
Would appreciate some suggestions of what kinds to get.

Thanks

If you do eartheaters you could definitely do a group in that tank. I am really enjoying vieja type central americans right now as well. Also check out Herichthys, they are aggressive but readily breed and show amazing breeding dress.

what are the dimensions of the tank? for SA try:severums, many kinds of acaras, chocolates so much to choose.if you go CA-freddies,JD,syns.i guess much will depend on what you can get locally unless your gonna get fish shipped which gives you more options

Its more than do-able, its a fantastic idea with a tank that size!!! (especially if it has a nice wide footprint)

I'd consider a mix of Geophagus, Satanoperca, Uaru, Pterophyllum, Heros, Acarichthys, Acara, Mesonauta, Hoplarchus, dwarf pikes, and even discus. Plenty of driftwood, a few catfish or perhaps a school of larger tetras, fine sand substrate, moderate lighting....

Just like this in fact! http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...499395-8-foot-south-american-tank-(1-Viewing)

The dimensions are 5ft x 2ft x 2ft (150cm x 60cm x 60cm)

Thanks for the stocking suggestions.

Heh, I somehow read 550G not 550L, must be getting too used to american measurements, though to be fair I had been up since 3.30am...

Regardless, the fish I sugested will still work, just in smaller numbers. If it were me I'd go for a group of one of the smaller species of Geophagus, some angels or Mesonauta, a school of some sort of tetra (lemons are great), a bunch of corys on the bottom and a couple of small-medium sized plecs. If you want more cichlids you could look at adding something like a single male severum or blue acara, but IMO keep the geos as a group buy avoid breeding pairs of the others if you want to keep the tank peaceful.

DavidR,
I wish the tank was 550 gals!

Thanks, I will look into some of those options.
Most of the fish at the lfs are youngsters, which I am assuming are more difficult to sex.

I have seen salvinii and nicaraguense. Are these too aggressive??

Are there any tough plants that will survive a cichlids attention?
