Hi friends.
Sad news to me today. Coming back from work, find out one of my blue turquoise died. It was a nice discus, always active, one of the biggest and older I had.
Don't know exactly the reason, but yesterday he was constipated, like bloated. See him throwing back some pellets and lying in the bottom.
Fastly I make another WC and he aparently get better. Later his belly has a kind of mark, darker but not black. Didn't know what to do (and sunday, all LFS are closed).
This morning (monday) he was still on the bottom, but when I came back with some meds, its was too late.
Checked all the parameters again, pH 6.8, amonia normal and nitrates almost zero. Only the Kh is a bit higher (but I don't have much experience in this parameter).
Anyways, all other discus are fine, no marks, not bloated, swimming fine and eating less, but eating. (now I'm offering much less food to them).
Their diet was made of frozen bloodworms, some frozen brine shrimp and sometimes alive brine shrimp and pellets.
stoping the live and frozen food for now.
Lesson to learn - take much more care with the food offered to them.
And I was happy, cause this days I rescued one little pigeon blood with some defective fins (born irregular - pics later).

Sorry for the big post, had to comment this with friends who could undestand me and teach me somethings

Epsoms salts would have relieved his constipation and bloat in a matter of hours (6-10) 1-2 Tablespoons per 10 gallons. Also soaking dry pellets in Garlic Guard or even just water before feeding will eliminate this problem altogether. I know this advise is too late now, but for future reference it may save a fish.

Regards,
Sue

tks Sue, and SusieQ.
I'll try to find some Epsom salt to keep it in stock in case of need.
Hope no other suffer with this, and I didn't know garlic guard would help. I ordered one and it arrives yesterday.

sorry to hear man, but yea from now just pre soak the pellets, i wish u all he luck

that is too bad.
Hope the pellet soaking and Epsom salts works for ya next time

Everyone here has great advice. Epsom salts is the first thing I would treat with because it does no harm, even to the tankmates that are not constipated. I have a pigeon blood that gets constipated easily. It will swim with a slight tilt, before it acually gets a bloated look. That is when I know its time to throw in the Epsom salt.

In my opinion I dont think your Discus died of being constipated for a day. Bloating in fish can be a number of different illnesses, including cancer. I do have a sneaking suspicion it could of been parasites because of the live food. A great Discus keeper once said. "Discus can get worms just by looking at live food." He was just joking but he was making a point...Dont feed them live food or they will eventually get parasites. Discus get parasites really easy.

Did your Discus have white/yellow/clear or stringy poo? Normal is dark and thick.

I'm very sorry for your loss :(
