So Cal
WELL... I've been breeding birds and I got a new pair and as luck would have it, 2 weeks after I got them, they laid eggs and 4/5 hatched. Good times !!!

They hatched oct 21st. I've been looking in on them almost every day, these birds were kept outside in their own cage, I have an aviary but its full, so I left this outside and all was fine. Well... I had a dog as well, the dog had a bit of a problem and we ended up putting him down... Sad times.

So, with the loss of my dog, but the new life of my new birds (Which would turn out stunning, btw) I was still looking up, the dog had a good life.

WELL... I didn't realize at the time, but apparently the dog was keeping SOMETHING away... because two days later, I check in on my birds and see three of the newly hatched chicks are gone... Im thinking a Rat took them, we have no snakes and a rat is a sneaky animal.

I've kept birds outside before with no problems... But now that my old dog is gone, w/e ate my birds has nothing to fear... And if it IS indeed a rat, rats don't have a hard time chewing threw chicken wire (Whats keeping my Aviary together)

We'll see how this turns out... I'll lay some traps and hope they don't eat anymore chicks..

One of the 4 birds is still alive, they are in my room now... VERY cliche, but if he survives to adulthood, his name will be lucky :D

I hate rats, when you find it you'll know what to do. Show no mercy!

We had ferrel cats mangle baby birds that were in a nest on our lower deck last summer. I was horrified when I walked down there to see decapitated chicks scattered around the deck. Those cats felt my wrath like no other.

Well, I hope you get whatever it is. Maybe a raccoon?

I use to raise Mallards, Pheasants, Partridges, Quail and Homing Pigeon. It was a lot of work making there pens predator proof. I had to deal with hawks, foxes, raccoons neighborhood dogs and feral cats. The ducks for the most part could take care of themselves. They were extremely protective of their nests and babies. I don't know where you live but you might have a snake or a rat to deal with.
