I agree, male.

Jags can be difficult to sex. Mainly because they don't have any landmark differences between sexes. Males tend to be larger, and thick bodied. Males also tend to have more prominent facial banding and will eventually lose the vertical stripes as they are replaced by the characteristic 'jaguar' patterning. Females tend to be smaller, thinner, and have a prominent lateral line. But none of these features is really 100% accurate. I've seen jags that you'd swear were male, and then one day they lay eggs, and vice versa. Definitely can be a more difficult cichlid to sex visually.

thanks i bought him at less than half that size for £15, he was really aggressive wen i ought him in a tank on his own but now hes ok! he doesnt like my silver arowana though and doesnt let the aro boss him about haha, he is well worth the money i paid for him lol, u got any pics of urs to show of ur jags??

thanks for the feed back!

I agree with xechox. The managuense can be very difficult especially as juveniles. My female recently died at 10 years. I was sold a younger male last year hoping to breed her again. She seemed to really like the new tank mate and threw eggs within a week. None hatched. Not sure if the new guy is even a guy. Will they flirt and lay eggs if there are only two females in the tank? It is also the only fish not to get beaten to death by her. So I was leaning toward male but he is dull has vert patterns and anal fins aren't too long.

I'd guess male by the pattern typical of males starting to show on it. These are amazing fish, I traded 2 black Convicts, a pink Convict, 3 Cutteri and a HRP for mine and I honestly am glad I made that choice. No matter male or female, I love mine. It's comical to watch it flare at my Texas and female Dempsey lol

looks male to me from what i can see. i would like to see a good picture of the tail fin to get a better idea. both males and females have alot of speckling on the tail fin but the males tend to have alot more. if your not familiar with it then its hard to tell but ive owned enough male and female jags to see the difference on the tail fin.
