I would really like to add a severum(rotkeil if I'm lucky and patient enough, if not, the red spot) into my 75g tank(set up in my signature) and I just wonder if it would be alright since they are on the mild side. I'll add another filter if I do get the severum.

Thanks in advance!

Save your money, if you're keeping up with your water changes you won't need it.

I've had sevs in my tank for a VERY long time and NEVER had a problem with them, ever. Not only are they gorgeous fish, they have a very mild temperament for a cichlid of its size. Get a green one and feed it right...and it will be mind-blowingly beautiful.

I won't get the extra filter then, it would ruin the look of the tank anyway.
I already got the gold sev. of about 2". I do agree the green one is beautiful but I believe the gold would bring more color and contrast to my current set up.

This is the first time I got a fish and can't wait for it to groowww. I'm so excited :D

Thanks! Any easy way to sex while young?

No easy way right away... You'll eventually notice around the 4-5" mark in a male some orange/reddish markings around the face. Females will not have this. Males will also grow faster, but since you don't have a group of the same fish to compare the growth rate to, that's probably not going to work.

I see, I'll love that severum no matter the sex :grinno: It's too bad I don't have a bigger tank atm for a pair(for some lovin'/baby makin'/fightin')

Gold severums are found in nature right? Only the red spot's are bred for the hobby?

Gold severums are not found in nature. Line bred like the "super reds" or whatever you want to call them.

EDIT: actually I'm not 100% sure on that... I think the genetics are present that it could happen in nature. I've never seen a wild caught gold though. I would assume its coloring, similar to albino fish, would make it an easy target to pick out by predators. Anyone want to chime in on this?
