what is a safe level of nitrates????? like whats a range that you do not want to exceed???

It is debatable, I like it under 20ppm but someone with discus would say that would be high. So it depends on the fish as well. I have known people that have had nitrate levels over 100ppm and their fish ate and acted normally!! If I was you I would try my best to keep my nitrates as low as possible but 20ppm to 30ppm for most fish is an acceptable level.

20-30ppm is a reasonable, abtainable, goal with w/c every other week. Although if you have a monster you will most likely need to go with weekly w/c. With my discus tank the nitrates are never above 10 ppm, My aro is kept between 10-20ppm the rest of my tanks may get as high as 40 ppm but i am adjusting w/c in order to lower that. By the way my planted 72g the nitrates are at zero.
