I have some nice looking river rocks I want to use in my cichlid tank. Does the vinager test work well enough to test them to see if they’re safe? I see no signs of metal in them either.

Its hard to be sure with vinegar. A better test is using acid as the bubbles are very obvious. Since the acid content in vinegar is so low, sometimes you won't notice the bubbles especially if the limestone percentage in the rock is low.

Almost any rock will be fine, except as noted, soft sandy or metallic. Dont be too concerned about Limestone unless your tank water is acidic. My three main tanks are scaped with Honeycombed Limestone and stocked with New Worlds as well as various Tetras. The PH stays locked in at 8.2. The fish do great.
