Hi. I just received 4 sailfin mollies as a birthday present. There are 2 females and 2 males. I have them in a 30 gallon aquarium. I always thought mollies should be a 1m to 3f mix. Will they be okay without other females? The males are constantly after the females, and one of them just gave a load of fry last night a few hours after bringing them home. Most of the fry are safely in a net breeder and we are slowly finding and catching the others.

My other ? is: My cousin also gave me 2 large dalmation mollies which the sailfin are just not interested in. Will the dalmations be okay in there, or are they better off not being in that tank?

I worry about the 1 to 1 ratio of these fish, as they are constantly chasing each other, (but not being agressive). Would it be better if I got online and ordered a few more females? I think the 30 gallon will safely hold at least 3 or 4 more of these. I can get a divider for the tank and separate the females from the males for awhile, but they all seem very bonded to each other.

I have a grow out tank for the babies, once they are a bit bigger. The adults really don't seem interested in the babies at all and aren't bothering them.

Pregnant females tend to birth fry when stressed like from a move. I would definitely get more females. The males will eventually stress them to death if not.
