I'm in the process of setting up a 55g, the main inhabitant of which will be a sajica, and I'm looking for a good number and mixture of suitable tankmates. I'm mostly interested in other cichlids. Not too interested in apistos or rams, geos....maybe. I've thought about flyers, rainbows, and keyholes. Any suggestions? Also, I think I want to stick to individuals, as I don't want to deal with the aggression/fry from a mated pair.

As sajicas are Central American, I'd stick with other, mid-sized central americans of similar temperment: cutteri, spilurum, myrnae, nanoluteus, septemfasciatum, Herotilapia, maybe centrarchus.

I'd stay away from Geos and other South Americans.

You could add some schooling fish like barbs or giant danios or goodeids as well.

SA tankmates I feel would work are some of the larger acaras as well as robust geos like G. steindachneri

What would be a good number of these fish for a 55g, considering their full grown size?

I'd pick a few favorites and stick to single specimens, no pairs, to keep the peace

I agree. But male and females of different species will pair up and kick the crap out of the others.

Here's a set-up that's worked for me in a 55g:
1 pair of sajica
1 pair of spilurum
6 rosy barbs
6 giant danios
6 rainbowfish
